Professional Men’s Packing Tips

13 Jun Posted by in Fashion Tips | Comments Off on Professional Men’s Packing Tips

The look of what you have on your arm (unless it’s an heiress!) is just as important as what’s on your back – especially in business travel.

Is your laptop case made of plastic with the “pleather” peeling around the edges? Is your suitcase a good condition roller bag or a backpack? You want to travel light, yet ensure that you have what you need for that unexpected activity, client or power dinner with the boss.

Here’s how:

1. Strategize on a yellow pad what you know will happen and what could possibly happen.

  • Travel to conference – check the weather
  • Drinks with guys – low key, but need a second option for when Ralphie pours his drink on me (again)
  • Meeting Day – comfortable but professional, conference rooms get cold
  • Dinner with Execs – possibly no time to transition – need to swing into power outfit in the men’s room?
  • Second meeting half day – need second “look” from same suit
  • Afternoon recreation – will they be poolside? Want to go to a local attraction? Need to be flexible.
  • Drinks/dinner with guys – Casual, but need to look sharp if Execs join us
  • Travel home – don’t know who will be on the plane/shuttle to airport – keep it comfortable but looking in control.

2. Pick one color theme – warm or cool.

Warm colors  are browns, and tans. Your suit is espresso brown or khaki. Your trousers are tan and/or soft brown. Your shirts are/have peach, greens, beige, yellow, same as ties.

Shoes and belts interchange as browns.

Cool colors are blues and grays. Your suit is charcoal,. Trousers are navy. Shoes and belt are black. Shirts are/have white, pink, blues, lavender, same as ties.

3. Packing tips.

  • Stuff your running shoes with your gym shorts, tee and socks
  • Roll up what you can (like tee shirts, knits, pool wear) into tight rolls.
  • Choose a suitcase that is not too big – snuggly packed garments that were place inside flat and can’t shift emerge in good shape.
  • Unpack as soon as you can and hang garments in the bathroom – turn the shower on hot for 10 minutes to let wrinkles fall out.

4. Invest in ready to go travel gear.

Buy a good looking travel bag – someone IS going to see it.

Pack a permanent Dopp kit with everything you need plus some emergency gear like sewing kit, sunscreen, a few medical supplies. For carry on trips, place the liquids part in a ziplock bag.

With these steps you can feel better prepared, and relax into the business at hand. Of course, if you want help, you know who to call!

Happy travels!
